Seat of Power: Gaming Chairs Enhance Play

It’s easy to see how some gamers end up spending so much money on accessories when you add up all the special controllers, high-powered headsets, memory upgrades and multiplayer network subscriptions that players use to enhance the experience. “Through the years, gamers have demonstrated a willingness to purchase items that enhance the gaming experience,” said David Cole, an industry analyst with market research firm DFC Intelligence. Some companies want to add one more item to that list: gaming chairs.

Customer Service at Health Clubs: Far From Fit

Many people who made New Year’s resolutions to slim down are in the process of joining health clubs. Fitness and finance experts alike suggest consumers make sure they’re selecting clubs with the facilities and amenities they want and that they read contracts carefully before signing to avoid problems if they don’t stick to their new regimes. It’s often easier to join health clubs than it is to quit, and failure to take that into account can cost the unwary consumer a lot of money.

Apple TV Will Cut Media Delivery’s Gordian Knot

The Apple TV will shatter the best hopes of Comcast, Time Warner, DirecTV and Dish Network, to name a few. To be sure, they’ll all still be around in five years, but they will never achieve the growth and dominance they seek. Allow me to explain. The HDTV industry in the U.S. has some serious problems, problems that are similar to the mobile phone industry. Namely, some basic human needs have become both subverted and overwhelmed by technological greed and meddling.

School Safety: Technology Outpacing the Law

After threatening to assassinate his assistant principal on MySpace.com last spring, a 15-year-old student at Bednarcik Junior High School in Oswego, Ill., was charged with harassment through electronic communication, a felony. His threats on the popular social networking Web site drew action by the police, but under Illinois law, officials may discipline students for misbehavior on school property or at school-sponsored events, but they have little authority over what students do off campus or online.

Uphill Road for Linux Cell Phones

Telecommunications industry analysts have been evangelizing the arrival of cell phones running on the Linux operating system for the last few years. The sermonizing has recently reached a fevered pitch in some quarters. The Linux operating system, they say, is on its way as a full-powered alternative to the Windows Mobile and the Symbian operating systems. However, U.S. consumers may have a considerable wait for Linux cell phones. Product features could be lacking at first, and U.S. phone carriers do not appear to be ready to offer Linux hand-held devices.

Microsoft Fixes Four Security Holes

Microsoft released three security patches for its prevalent Office line of software and one for the Windows operating system on Tuesday, fixing holes that could let an outsider take control of an unwitting victim’s computer. Two of the Office vulnerabilities and the Windows hole were deemed critical, the company’s highest threat level. The fourth, rated “important,” affects only versions of Office with a Brazilian Portuguese grammar analyzer. One of the critical vulnerabilities can be found in Microsoft’s latest Web browser, Internet Explorer 7.

Kodak Sells Health Business Unit for $2.55 Billion

Eastman Kodak said Wednesday it will sell its health imaging business to Onex Healthcare Holdings, a subsidiary of Canadian investment company Onex, for up to US$2.55 billion. Created a year after the discovery of X-ray film in 1895, the unit accounts for nearly one-fifth of Kodak’s overall sales, but its operating profit plunged 21 percent in 2005 as margins tightened. Kodak plans to use the proceeds to repay about $1.15 billion of secured term debt and for other undisclosed purposes.

CBS to Offer Clips of Prime-Time Shows on Web

Fans of CBS shows will soon be able to slice clips from prime-time shows, send them to friends and even “mash” them together in ways that only a short time ago would have triggered complaints of copyright infringement. CBS chief executive Leslie Moonves said Tuesday his company would embrace products and technologies that allow viewers to “time shift” and “place shift” his network’s shows. CBS is also designing its Web sites to encourage interaction among fans of the CBS crime drama “CSI” and “The L-Word,” which appears on the CBS-owned Showtime cable channel.

SOA and the Future of Business Applications

We are at a very important juncture in the evolution of service-oriented architecture. An incredibly important issue right now is whether we are going to win broad acceptance and deep penetration, or whether SOA remains somewhat marginal. There are a number of things going on in the market that deserve examination. Trends and developments in information technology such as market acceptance and tipping points — and a sort of social-animal instinct influencing how people behave — become very important.
