Yahoo Search UK lowers starting bids

Yahoo Search Marketing UK announced to advertisers today via email that the starting bid prices on some keywords will be reduced to £0.05 from 19th January.

“In order to reflect the dynamics of the market, and to help you maximise your return on investment, Yahoo! Search Marketing will introduce a new minimum variable bid pricing structure. This means that from January 19th, our bidding prices will start from as little as £0.05, which is great news for your business!”

One can only assume that “market dynamics” refers either to increased complaints from existing advertisers about their campaign ROI, or Yahoo’s need to attract advertisers and make themselves more competitive with Google AdWords, where starting bids can still be as low as 1p.

This is, in fact, good news for Yahoo’s existing advertisers, assuming those advertisers invest time and effort developing “long tail” keywords with little competition as those will most likely be the type of terms to which this lower pricing applies. This means advertisers will incur an even lower cost risk on such terms, but will not necessarily lead to a significant increase in overall ROI since many advertisers incur the bulk of their costs on more generic “head” terms.

It’s certainly hard to complain about lower pricing, and this action may attract more advertisers, but it will have little impact on what Yahoo! needs most in the UK and the rest of Europe…a higher market share of searches.

ChannelAdvisor is a //CODiE// Finalist —–WOOO!!!

Every year the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) recognizes excellence in software via an award program they call the //CODiE// awards. We just learned today that ChannelAdvisor Merchant was chosen as a finalist in both the Best Business Software Solution and Best eCommerce Solution categories!

You can read all of the details on the program here.

This is admittedly a super-geeky accomplishment, but, heck, as a guy that still sleeps in his Star Wars underoos, this is pretty dang exciting.  I wanted to thank the entire ChannelAdvisor team for all of the hard work that has gone into making Merchant a huge success and most importantly our customers.  Without you, there would be no ChannelAdvisor and of course, no opportunity to be a //CODiE// finalist!

Fake Second Chance Offers Be Gone!

Not unexpected, eBay’s Rob Chestnut has announced today that eBay is rolling out its eBay Safeguarding Member IDs (SMI) to eBay.com and eBay Canada this week. Launched in November on eBay Motors, it masks bidders’ ID with aliases and provides an updated Bid History page.

Following SMI’s introduction last fall on eBay Motors, our eBay sites in the United Kingdom and Australia also made the decision to launch SMI. The results we’re seeing for all three launches indicate that these changes are having the impact we are striving for – in short, a reduction in unwanted commercial and malicious spam (including Fake Second Chance Offers) to bidders on higher-priced auction-style listings.

As a result eBay.com and eBay.ca will be launching SMI later this week. SMI will impact listings on eBay.com that start at or reach a bid level of $200 or greater. On eBay Canada, it will impact listings above the C$220 level. Please read our Safeguarding Member IDs Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Rob’s also waving the big shill bidding stick, assuring the community that eBay has invested a significant amount of money into detecting and acting upon it. TameBay had an good guest post by an eBay Motors sellers a few weeks back that argues that these changes should in fact reduce this practice.
